Geekery

I’ll be Rifting…

If you need me, I’ll be in Telara starting tomorrow after work. I’ll be playing on the Faeblight server as a Defiant. I will probably post about my character and the game a bit more later. It’s fun! /geekout

The One Where I Complain a Little…

Sometimes I don’t like being ‘sorta’ geeky. Not because I think it’s bad to be a geek – on the contrary! Geeks are wonderful! But, when you’re only ‘sorta’ anything, you don’t quite fit in on either side… a little too geeky to be normal, a bit too normal to be geeky. It results in a lot of awkwardness.

I had the pleasure of going out to an Irish pub after the SCA meeting on Wednesday. It probably wasn’t obvious to the people around me, but I had a blast listening to the stories and watching the interactions. It really made me wish I had the time, energy, and resources to be more than just ‘sorta’ geeky though. I’d probably also need to do something about my inability to quote Movies and TV shows. I’ve never had a great memory for such things, and that’s a pretty serious deficiency in some geek circles.

Also, I’m pretty good at having experiences, but I’m not very good at talking about them afterwards. I’m sure that has given many people the impression that I’m terribly boring. But, if I don’t know you well, I usually can’t find the right words. I guess I keep this a little too close to my heart: “It’s better to be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Busy!

I’m still alive & healthy, I’m just quite busy with non-computer things! *grin*

I’m trying to finish up my garb this weekend so I can give it a trial run during Wednesday’s SCA Folkmoot. Let me just say Thank Goodness I started on the underdress first, heh. It’s not all that pretty, but it should be functional. It has been quite the learning experience putting it together, considering I have practically zero experience with sewing.

Other than that, I got a book about medieval calligraphy, and a pen & paper so I can give it a try. I’ll wait until I’m finished with my tunics though, or I may never finish them!

Further geekage includes finishing the first season of the new Dr. Who. It was pretty fun and terribly campy. I’ll have to see how the second season goes!

Growing Things and Gaelic Football

Guess what’s currently on our balcony! Three planters full of dirt, seeds, water, and love! Jon and I (but mostly Jon) are growing Basil, Rosemary, and Dill! Once we have some sprouts I’ll probably take some photos of them. Right now they just look like plastic pots of dirt, heh. I’m particularly looking forward to the basil. If we can get enough of it to grow I’m totally making homemade pesto. Maybe even enough to freeze some for later. Of course… I don’t actually own a large food processor… so we’ll see. I might be making it in very small batches if I don’t procure a different processor.

Beyond our new gardening adventure, Jon and I are planning to head to a Twin Cities Gaelic Football Club practice tonight! I don’t plan to actually join the team, since most of their games are on Sundays and Jon and I both work weekends, but it’ll be fun to try something new and see what my younger brother has been up to for the past year or so. He’s the vice chair of the club! Here’s hoping we’ll be able to keep up with the regular players, at least a little bit anyway. *chuckle*

New Geekery!

I’ve been invited to an SCA meeting! It’s something I’ve been tempted to try for a while, so since my friend Mara is kind enough to let me tag along with her, I’m finally going to see what it’s all about! She thinks the theme of the evening is embroidery, which is something I have no experience in, so it should be pretty interesting. Weirdly, I think I’m all the more interested in this sort of group because I never had to take a Home Econ. class in school, so there are a lot of practical skills that I never picked up – sewing, cooking, building medieval weaponry/armor…

Actually…

I DO know how to create chainmaile! *grin* I can’t wait!
