Because I already bike to work.

So, I joined the 2009 Commuter Challenge at work on Saturday. I didn’t join last year, or the year before, etc. because I already bike to work 95% of the time, when there’s no snow anyway. Basically, I already do it, so why sign a piece of paper? But, this year… this year I didn’t get to say “No, thanks” to the 40yr old woman. Nope. Instead, I was faced with that woman’s 10yr old daughter, so I ended up caving with an “Ok, why not” instead.  That’s a cheap stunt right there – getting the young generation to guilt ya, heh. *chuckle*

As much as I’d dig winning a prize, I’ll feel a little guilty if I do, since I’m not actually changing my (already decent) transportation habits, and the whole point is to get people thinking of ways they can change their habits, right?

Record Store Day!

It was Record Store Day today! I’ve never collected vinyl myself, but I used to adore digging through my Dad’s collection of 45′s when I was a kid. (I think my favorite was Dizzy by Tommy Roe.) I do own one record. It was a gift from my dear, thoughtful husband.

On one of our first dates, we stopped at a record store in downtown Minneapolis called Let It Be Records. (Alas, the store is no more, they only do mail order now.) We were just bumming around, looking through the LPs for the cover art. We found one of a blue pig head surrounded by flowers by The Suburbs. It stuck out in our minds as the most bizarre cover we saw. The next date we had, my husband presented me with a token of his interest – the LP! He drove all the way back downtown, over a half hour drive from where he lived in Shakopee, getting quite lost in the process, just to buy the album for me. Apparently it took him a couple hours to get home after he purchased it due to his wonky sense of direction. *chuckle* It’s one of the goofiest and sweetest things he’s done for me. (The present that most obviously tops the LP has to be the gift certificate to the cheese store at the mall. That was the best! He truly knows me. *grin*)

Here’s a YouTube video of Waiting by The Suburbs, which is on the LP my husband bought for me: Continue reading Record Store Day!

Fresh Start

Ahh, nothing like a fresh start, eh? It’s been a while since I’ve written a regular blog, and I’ve missed it. I’m not profound, or exciting, but it’s nice to have an outlet for all the things my brain bothers with.

The spring cleaning around the apartment has been relatively successful thus far. We’ve got a long way to go, but it’s going better than last year. My husband finally started looking through some old boxes, boxes that haven’t been opened since they were brought into the apartment nearly three years ago. There’s loads of his childhood goodies in them.

The highlight of my afternoon was reading through the copy of My Book About Me he found. He’d filled out when he was six years old or so, and it’s absolutely adorable. It turns out that his favorite sport is rollerskating, and he’s glad he’s not a giraffe. *grin*

On Saturday night my brother and I saw Blue Man Group at the Xcel Center. One of his coworkers bought tickets back in December but was unable to attend, so we got to go for free! It helps that everyone my brother works with adores him. Anyway, it was a great way to belatedly celebrate his birthday. I’m quite glad I’d taken vacation time over the weekend!

The show was not quite what I expected, but still a ton of fun. I think I probably enjoyed the novelty of the opening act more than the Blue Men though. The opener was Mike Relm, a DJ who spins music AND videos simultaneously. He’s ridiculous! If you ever get the chance to see him in action you won’t regret it.

Here’s a sample: Continue reading Fresh Start
